On the morning of August 12, 2024, an 11-year-old girl and her 34-year-old mother were stabbed in a violent attack near a tea shop in Leicester Square, central London.

The girl sustained serious injuries after being stabbed multiple times, including wounds to her face, neck, wrist, and shoulders. Her mother also suffered injuries, though less severe. Both were immediately taken to hospital, where the girl underwent surgery but later recovered and was discharged.

The attacker, described as a white man in a black T-shirt and jeans, was acting erratically and was quickly subdued by a security guard at the scene. The 29-year-old guard, who worked at the nearby tea shop, tackled and restrained the suspect with the help of bystanders until police arrived just a few minutes later.

Authorities arrested a 32-year-old man, later identified as the suspect, at the scene. Early investigations suggest that the man did not know the victims and that the attack was unprovoked. There is no indication that the incident was terror-related.

The suspect has been charged with attempted murder and possession of a bladed weapon. He appeared in court and was remanded in custody, with another hearing scheduled for September.

Police praised the swift actions of the security guard and other bystanders, noting that their bravery helped prevent further harm. The area was cordoned off for several hours as investigators gathered evidence and interviewed witnesses.

Despite the traumatic incident, the young girl reportedly recovered well enough to attend a Taylor Swift concert she had originally traveled to London to see.
